The basics

There aren't absolute rules, but these guidelines work well for most rooms and furniture arrangements.

Ideally, at least the front legs of the sofa and main chairs should sit on the rug. Larger rooms often look better when all furniture legs fit on it.

The rug should extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed so you step onto the rug when getting up.

Choose a rug large enough for dining chairs to remain on the rug even when they're pulled away from the table.

Leave visible flooring around the rug and make sure doors can open freely over the rug and pad.
